People have often expressed to me that they would be too nervous to go for a massage, or too self conscious, or that it’s going to hurt. There are common misconceptions about massage that I hope to clear up for you in this post. Worryingly, a lot of people who have come to me for treatments, after having massages in different places, have said they didn’t realize that they can actually ask the therapist working on them to go, either, harder or lighter, and ended up having a bad experience. You can ALWAYS ask. It’s YOUR treatment and YOUR money. I’m going to fill you in on 5 things I’d like you to know about going for a massage and hopefully by the end of it you will be more comfortable about booking in for one.
1. SIZE DOESN’T MATTER
Whether you are size 0 or size 30, the masseuse simply DOES NOT CARE! When I work on your body during a massage all I see and concentrate on are your tendons, muscles and joints. I do not judge, I don’t give a second thought to what size you are, because it really doesn’t matter. All I want to do is ease your aches and pains, soothe away your tension and make sure you’re floating out the door at the end. So please, please, please keep in mind that there is no reason to be self conscious when it comes to your body…I’m massaging people 10 years and believe me when I say I’ve seen it all before.
2. MASSAGE ISN’T SEEDY
There is nothing sexual about going for a massage. A massage is only sexual between you and your lover, partner, husband or wife. Massage benefits your body, your mind, boosts your health and well being…it’s a step towards a happier and healthier you and there’s absolutely nothing seedy about that.
3. MASSAGE ISN’T A LUXURY IT’S A NECESSITY
Everybody thinks that massage is a luxury and it really isn’t it. Studies have shown, time and time again, that massage significantly reduces stress in people. Stress is the cause of SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT of diseases and disorders. SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT. That’s huge!!! By reducing your stress levels, you are reducing your chances of becoming ill. In places like China, people go to a masseuse/acupuncturist the way we go to a doctor. For centuries they’ve known the tremendous effects it has on our overall health and improving homeostasis in the body. I firmly believe that if everyone had a massage for even 30 minutes a week, we would see a huge reduction in stress related illnesses and the world would seem that little bit brighter.
4. YOU WILL NOT BE SCREAMING IN PAIN THROUGHOUT
When it comes to massage you will often here the phrase, “No pain, no gain.” While this can be true to a certain extent, the masseuse has to work within the limits of the person on the treatment table. Before a massage, I always ask what type of pressure you prefer and let you know that you can just ask me if you’d like me to go either, harder or lighter, at any time throughout. Don’t be scared to speak up. When someone is particularly tense, they tend to have what we call “knots”, which are caused from over contraction of the muscle from stress, posture, your type of work to how you drive your car. Massage, when received regularly, will break down these “knots” but any good masseuse won’t just jump straight in with deep pressure. We slowly build it up, warming the tissues and loosening out the muscles first. When working on the “knots” it can be quite tender, but if it ever gets too much, just say. Afterwards, your range of movement will be so much freer and you will literally feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders, you’ll wonder why it took you so long to start getting regular massages.
5. HAIRY LEGS? Doesn’t matter! Cellulite? Doesn’t matter! THINNING HAIR? Doesn’t matter!
Over the years, there have been so many women who have come into me for a massage, and apologised for not shaving! Ladies, it does not matter. Massage does not require you to be freshly shaven. Like I said earlier, all I see are your muscles! Hair on your legs is irrelevant. If you’re losing hair or have no hair, because of age, alopecia, chemo, or illness, there’s no need to be self conscious. You can still reap the benefits of massage, once your scalp isn’t tender. Massaging the scalp will actually promote hair growth, because it boosts circulation to the hair follicle. If you have cellulite, stretch marks, scars, that’s ok too, massage can help with all of them and I’ve seen it all before. We’re all human and we all have our insecurities but don’t let them get in the way of having such a positive experience, like massage.
So there you have it, I hope I have cleared up any misconceptions you might have had regards massage and maybe helped you feel a bit more comfortable in going for one. Massage is super safe and beneficial for everyone; women, men, children, old, young.
